Step by step hot tub cleaning
1) Flush the lines
The first step in hot tub cleaning is to flush the lines. This requires that your hot tub is still on. Many people will actually skip this step, but it is a necessary step to give your hot tub a really thorough cleaning. Over the course of a hot tub's life, bacteria can build up inside the pipes. You don't need hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, white vinegar or any other cleaning product. There is a product called a "hot tub system flush" that is specifically designed to clean hot tub plumbing.
To use a hot tub flush, simply pour it into the hot tub and let it circulate for about 20 minutes. If you want a super clean hot tub, you can leave the flush on for up to 4 hours. When cleaning your hot tub with a flush, a thick layer of brown or black foam may rise to the surface. This can be worrisome, but it just means that the flush effectively cleaned the pipes.
2) Drain the Hot Tub
After cleaning the pipes in your hot tub, you now want to drain the water out of your hot tub. It is important to make sure that your hot tub is off before you drain it. Once your hot tub is closed, you will want to remove the filter. Your hot tub will have a side designed for service access. Inside this service access area is your drain valve. There will be a drain fitting with a shut-off valve that fits into the female end of your garden hose. Make sure the other end of the hose is where the hot tub can drain.
The water you drain won't be fresh water, but it is safe to dispose of in your yard, septic system or drains. However, make sure you follow all local/municipal codes and disposal regulations. Now turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to open the valve and drain the water. You will need to let the spa drain completely before closing the valve. This may take a while to drain, so in the meantime, you can clean the hot tub filter and cover it.
