JOYEE – 5 Clear Signs It’s Time to Change Your Hot Tub Cover
1. The Cover Is Sinking in the Center
If you notice that the middle of your hot tub cover is dipping lower than the edges, it’s a sign of trouble. This usually happens when water, snow, or debris collects on top, adding extra weight. Over time, this causes the center to sag while the edges stay firm. A sunken cover can lift the corners slightly and let heat escape, which slowly raises your energy bill.
2. Cracks or Tears in the Material
Small rips, splits, or damage to the surface can let heat leak out. Regular use, sun exposure, and wear over time can cause the vinyl or seams to weaken. In some cases, pests or dirt can get inside through larger openings. Using a cover lift or support system can help prevent further damage.
3. Bad Smell from the Cover
If your cover gives off a musty or unpleasant odor, it might be due to mold or bacteria trapped inside. To figure out the source, remove the cover and smell both the hot tub and the cover separately. If the odor is only coming from the cover, it’s probably time for a new one.
4. The Cover Feels Much Heavier
When a cover starts absorbing moisture, it becomes noticeably heavier. This often means the internal vapor seal is broken and the cover is waterlogged. A waterlogged cover won’t insulate well, and it may eventually warp or become difficult to move.
5. The Safety Straps Are Broken
Even one broken latch or strap can reduce how well your cover seals in heat. This not only makes the hot tub less efficient but can also affect safety. Fortunately, many manufacturers offer replacement parts, and some straps may be covered by warranty. It’s worth checking before buying a full replacement.
How Much Does a Replacement Cover Cost?
Prices can vary quite a bit. Basic covers are cheaper but might wear out sooner, while expensive ones aren’t always better quality.
Hard covers: typically range from $200 to $1,000+
Soft covers: often cost $50 to $800, with good-quality ones around $250
While you technically don’t need a cover, having one can help you save significantly on energy costs. A decent soft cover generally lasts 5 to 7 years, and replacing it when it shows these signs can save money in the long run.
